Smaug by Janaquil Smaug by Janaquil
Smaug, completed January 2014 after roughly 600 hours. Image and design © Liz Heffner.

The intent was to capture some of the style and essence of Medieval manuscript illustration.

Stitch techniques: couched goldwork, split stitch, French knots, bead appliqué.

Materials: Japanese gold, gilt and silver passing threads, gilt spangles, gold metallic yarn, 100% silk (soie de Paris) and Swarovski 'pearls' on cotton broadcloth stabilised with canvas.

The inscription reads:

The dragon smote the mountainside in anger but did not find Bilbo and the dwarves.

I can totally see this image as part of the annals of Erebor and Dale! :) Maybe even a dwarven reproduction of the Red Book or a Tapestry!

This is incredible! I thought it was a medieval style manuscript when I clicked on it but when I saw it was embroidery I was blown away! I love it!

Absolutely gorgeous! It captures the style of an illumination very well, but even closer it is to the Arts and Crafts Movement, I think. :) Wonderful work.

Yep, hehe!  I wasn't going to stitch him all, but he developed a mind of his own and refused to take anything less!  That would be dragons for you, I suppose!

gosh that's so true!! it must be how I wound up cross stitching a Smaug picture too(based on this fav.me/d5gqhtg ) I saw it and he must've insisted on me doing so :D but I felt quite bad after watching DoS for doing it-he's really demonic, isn't he?!
